Sow: Feb to Jun
Harvest: May to Jun
Sowing Indoors
Sow seeds individually in small pots of moist seed compost 1 cm deep. Place in warmth 15–18 °C. Grow on under cool, light conditions, but not in direct sunlight.
Hardening Off / Planting Out
Gradually accustom young plants to conditions outside for 2–3 weeks before planting out to their cropping positions when danger of frost has passed. Plant fairly deeply, leaving about 5 cm of soil above the level of the compost in the pots. Choose the site with care, as asparagus is a permanent crop and will remain harvestable for 15 years or more if desired.
Harvest
Using a sharp knife, cut stems just below the soil’s surface. Do not harvest initially until the second summer after sowing to allow the plant to develop, and then harvest sparingly for a further year.
