Unwins Carrot James Scarlet Intermediate Seeds are a heritage variety producing heavy yields of long, pointed roots.

Pick these carrots young, or store for winter use. This main crop variety was bred in 1870's and has certainly stood the test of time as a garden worthy vegetable. Full of vitamin, this tasty Chantenay variety is great for roasting and good for exhibiting.

Their scent can also repel carrot fly.

Sow: Mar to Jul
Harvest: Jul to Nov

Sowing Outdoors
Sow thinly, 1 cm deep, in shallow, pre-watered drills in soil that hasn’t been manured in the last 12 months. Keep soil moist at all times. Protect early sowings with cloche or fleece.

Thinning
Thin seedlings to 5–8 cm apart. Avoid crushing the leaves, as their scent attracts carrot root fly.

Aftercare
Carrots do best on light, stone-free, fertile soils. Use fleece to protect against low-flying carrot root fly. Roots store well if cleaned and packed in boxes of dry sand or compost.
