Sowing Indoors
Sow seeds singly in module trays to avoid root disturbance, about 1 cm deep. Keep on a warm windowsill (15–20 °C) and water regularly.

Growing On / Planting Out
Gradually acclimatise seedlings to outdoor conditions before planting out after the risk of frost has passed. Plant into fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot, 30 cm apart, avoiding root disturbance. Alternatively, plant three per container at least 40 cm in diameter.

Sowing Outdoors
Sow outdoors from early to mid-summer, thinly, in a pre-watered drill about 1.5 cm deep. Carefully thin to 30 cm apart when seedlings are large enough to handle. Thinnings are tasty in salads. For baby bulbs, sow more closely together.

Aftercare
Regular watering is essential for bulb development. Avoid letting soil or containers dry out.

Advice
Fennel dislikes heavy soils and cold conditions. Baby bulbs can be harvested in a few weeks; mature bulbs take about 3 months. Leaves can also be used for flavouring.
