Unwins Basil Sweet Green Seeds are an easy-to-grow, essential herb. This half-hardy annual is perfect for pots, and can be sown all year round, but ideally between February and July.
An important part of Mediterranean cooking, pick your basil fresh from the plants as and when needed for pizza, pasta and pesto. A fantastic flavour, this basil complements tomato dishes fantastically well.
Sow: February to July
Harvest: June to September
Sowing
Seeds can be sown at any time of year, but the optimum time is between February and July. Sow in 8cm pots of firm, pre-watered compost, covering with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Cover with cling film and keep around 15°C. When the seedlings emerge, remove the cling film and keep on a sunny windowsill. Water regularly to keep the compost damp, but not wet.
Planting Out
Plants can be moved outside in late spring and summer, acclimatising them gradually. If growing in containers, choose a pot at least 20cm in diameter.
Aftercare
Harvest the tips regularly and remove any flowers as you see them. Avoid leaving plants wet overnight; morning watering is ideal.
