Sowing Outdoors
Soil should be well-dug, stone-free, and not recently manured. Sow seeds fairly thinly in pre-watered shallow rows, covering with a little soil. Delay early sowings if soil is very wet or cold; later sowings will make up any lost time.
ThinningAs seedlings develop, thin them gradually, eventually to about 15 cm apart. Keep soil moist until seedlings are established.
AdviceRoots can be left in the ground until required. Autumn frost improves flavour. Parsnip seed should be used in the year of opening the packet. Allow up to 3 weeks to germinate. Do not sow indoors, as parsnip seedlings don’t transplant well.
